THE HUMAN LEADERSHIP ADVANTAGE: WHAT WILL WE CHOOSE TO KEEP HUMAN?
I have spent much of my life studying something technology cannot fully explain: what happens to people when they begin to trust their own voice.
I have watched people who were hesitant to speak become leaders others listened to. I have watched talented people discover that confidence was not about having every answer—it was about trusting themselves when the answer wasn't obvious.
And now, as artificial intelligence transforms how we work, I believe those human capabilities matter more than ever.
We are asking extraordinary questions about AI.
What can it automate?
How much time can it save?
What jobs will change?
What will it be able to do next?
Those are important questions.
But I believe leaders need to add one more:
What must remain human?
That question became the foundation of the Human Leadership Advantage™.
AI IS REVEALING SOMETHING
I don't believe AI is causing all of our leadership problems.
I believe it is revealing them.
Put an organization under pressure and things become visible.
When people are uncertain, unclear communication becomes obvious. When decisions must be made quickly, weak judgment becomes costly. When employees fear what AI could mean for their future, trust matters.
And when leaders themselves don't know exactly what comes next, something else happens:
They have to lead without having all the answers.
That requires a different kind of leadership development.
For years, organizations have invested heavily in processes, systems, strategy, and technical expertise. Those things matter.
But imagine what could happen if we became equally intentional about developing the human being who must lead those systems.
WHAT IF WE TRAINED FOR THE MOMENT THAT MATTERS?
Leadership development often happens when everything is calm.
But leadership is tested when it isn't.
What happens when an employee asks a question you weren't expecting?
When the data gives you three possible answers?
When your team disagrees with your decision?
When AI recommends one direction but your experience, ethics, or understanding of people tells you to look again?
Those are the moments I am interested in.
Because leadership is not simply what you know.
Leadership is what you can access when the pressure is on.
That is why the Human Leadership Advantage™ centers on three capabilities: clear thinking and judgment, leadership voice and communication, and presence under pressure.
And all three can be developed.
Imagine leadership teams practicing difficult conversations before the real conversation happens.
Imagine emerging leaders learning how to communicate a decision they didn't personally make.
Imagine managers being given an AI-generated recommendation and being challenged not simply to accept or reject it, but to question it:
What information might be missing?
Who could be affected?
What assumptions are we making?
What requires human judgment?
Now leadership development becomes more than information.
It becomes practice.
And practice changes what we are able to do when the moment is real.
AUTOMATE. AUGMENT. KEEP HUMAN.
I believe organizations need another conversation as they adopt AI.
Take the work being done inside your organization and place it into three categories:
Automate.
Augment.
Keep Human.
Some tasks should absolutely be automated.
Others can be strengthened by AI while a person remains involved.
But the third category requires courage.
What will your organization deliberately keep human?
Perhaps it is mentorship.
Perhaps it is delivering difficult news.
Perhaps it is making an ethical decision.
Perhaps it is developing young employees instead of automating away every entry-level opportunity they once used to learn.
Perhaps it is simply recognizing that efficiency and humanity do not have to be opposing goals.
This conversation can happen around a conference table, during a leadership retreat, inside a workshop, or across an entire organization.
The answers will not be identical.
They shouldn't be.
The important thing is that leaders are intentionally asking the question.
DEVELOP THE HUMAN, NOT JUST THE TECHNOLOGY
Organizations are going to spend enormous amounts of time and money teaching people how to use AI.
We should.
But I hope we invest just as intentionally in teaching people how to lead alongside it.
Give leaders situations where they must think.
Let them wrestle with ambiguity.
Let them practice speaking when they are uncomfortable.
Let them receive feedback.
Let them have conversations across generations and cultures.
Put them into realistic pressure situations where the answer is not sitting neatly on a PowerPoint slide.
Then ask:
What did you notice about yourself?
Did you speak?
Did you listen?
Did you react or respond?
Did you trust the technology too quickly?
Did you dismiss it too quickly?
Did you ask the question nobody else was willing to ask?
That is where leadership development becomes personal.
And that is where transformation can begin.
THE OPPORTUNITY BEFORE US
As I look toward conversations with leaders from around the world, I don't see AI only as a threat to human leadership.
I see an extraordinary opportunity.
Technology is forcing us to examine what people uniquely bring to leadership.
Judgment.
Courage.
Connection.
Voice.
Trust.
Presence.
Humanity.
AI may become better at giving us answers.
Our responsibility is to become better at asking the questions that matter.
So I leave leaders and organizations with this:
Don't only ask how prepared your organization is for artificial intelligence.
Ask how prepared your people are to lead in a world shaped by it.
Develop the technology.
Develop the systems.
But don't forget to develop the human being standing in the middle of them.
Because technology may change the workplace.
Human leadership will determine what we do with that change.
And that is our Human Leadership Advantage™.
